Hometown Baseball
Binghamton and the Triple Cities have a long baseball history. The Phoebe Snow would pull into the Lackawanna Station bringing the Yankees for exhibition games. I grew up with stories of pinstriped heroes rubbing elbows with local fans. Riding along North Broad Street past the left field fence during a night game, produced a flickering illusion of motion inside the park from the spaces between the slats.
Unfortunately, we lost our minor league team for 24 years when the new Interstate ran over home plate. Minor league baseball finally returned to our community in 1992 with the Binghamton Mets playing in our newly constructed stadium. Now the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NY Mets AA) is my home town team and we celebrated their 30th Anniversary last year.
